Client Description:

The Latin@s Gaining Access to Networks for Advancement in Science (L@S GANAS) program at the University of Illinois at Chicago was created through a Hispanic Serving Institution STEM grant from the US Department of Education. UIC is one of a handful of research intensive universities to achieve Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) status. Working with the UIC Rafael Cintrón Ortiz Latino Cultural Center, the L@s GANAS cultural dialogues were designed to provide regular group discussion for Latinx students to connect their cultural heritage to their STEM studies.

Project Description:

The LCC has developed a series of dialogues for students to explore cultural and scientific themes through arts and material culture. Given the complex nature of these programs, we have already written a tool for future training of internal staff. This internal guide is very detailed, at 50p long, but we are looking to edit/rewrite this content into an external guide to share with other Hispanic Serving Institutions. We need a writer/editor with experience working in popular education materials who can take what we have written, condense it, and make it usable for other staff and faculty who want to do similar dialogues. We are looking for someone who can complete this project during the Fall semester of 2018, providing drafts for review along the way. The resultant external guide should be no more than 25-30 pages.

Candidates should have:

• Demonstrated experience writing/editing popular education curricula for museums, cultural centers, or community organizations
• Creativity, enthusiasm for the arts and higher education
• Interest in science and Latinx cultural heritage
• Ability to adapt to client feedback and work efficiently to meet deadlines
